It is often confusing if it is legal to run a locked wheel on a highway. Although some lockwheels are considered to comply with dot (Department of transportation) standards, many do not. This is why you often see "off-road use only" cast into chain wheels. For this reason alone, some tire stores will not install them on your vehicle. Chain wheel manufacturers will be able to tell you whether their lock sprockets comply with dot standards.

Just because you don't have chain wheels doesn't mean you can't reduce the tire pressure to a fairly low level when off-road. In fact, for most trucks and SUVs, we have safely reduced to 12 psi, which greatly improves off-road driving quality and tire performance. Less than 12 psi significantly increases the chance of tire to wheel separation.
